Tom Waits is an American singer-songwriter from Pomona, California, who spent the 1970s as skid row's barroom laureate, then rebuilt his entire sound with Swordfishtrombones (1983) — junkyard percussion, carnival menace, and a voice like a gravel driveway — in the era-defining partnership with wife and co-writer Kathleen Brennan. Rain Dogs, Mule Variations, and decades of songs made him one of America's most covered writers; his refusal to tour more than a handful of times made every ticket an event.
