The moment
Eef Barzelay hit bottom in the mid-2010s — bankruptcy, divorce, the band name nearly all he had left — and the way back ran through Scott Avett, who produced Forever Just Beyond and told anyone who'd listen that Barzelay was one of America's great unheralded songwriters. The comeback suited rooms like the Word Barn: a literal barn in Exeter, New Hampshire, close enough to see the guitar wear. John came back three years later for another one.
