The moment

The middle chapter of the archive's twenty-year Oberst thread: a decade after the Bright Eyes double-release peak, Oberst was touring solo behind Upside Down Mountain while his reunited punk band Desaparecidos had an album landing weeks later — writing his way out of the hardest stretch of his public life. Lady Lamb opened. John saw him at 25 as the anointed new Dylan and would see Bright Eyes again in 2025 in this same room; this was the working-songwriter years between the myths.
