A free show on the Esplanade, the summer The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most turned Chris Carrabba into a phenomenon — the crowd sang every word back at him off the river. setlist.fm documents the date. No ticket ever existed; it was free.
The moment
Nine days before this show, Screaming Infidelities won the MTV2 Award at the VMAs, beating videos by the Strokes and the White Stripes — the moment emo formally crashed the mainstream. Chris Carrabba's MTV Unplugged had just aired, built on the thing his shows were famous for: the crowd singing every word louder than he did. Then he played a free show on the Esplanade, and a few thousand people did exactly that, off the river, for nothing.

- The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most
“The 2001 album that turned an acoustic side project into the face of emo’s second wave.”
