Frank Black in late 2002 was deep in his workmanlike second act — the Catholics recorded live to two-track, two full albums released on the same day that summer, the Pixies a closed subject he'd spent a decade declining to discuss. Nobody in the Avalon knew the statute of limitations was nearly up: within a year the reunion was in motion, and by 2004 the Pixies were the biggest comeback in rock.
