The moment
Sixteen days earlier, Nevermind hit #1 — and here was the collision in one building: Guns N' Roses, the last titans of rock-star excess, touring the twin Use Your Illusion albums with Soundgarden, Seattle's own, opening. The old order was headlining while the new one warmed up its crowd. Within two years GN'R had effectively dissolved and Soundgarden's Superunknown was on its way to #1. John had caught the Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Chili Peppers bill four weeks before this — between the two stubs, the whole changing of the guard.
