The Jesus and Mary Chain opened, per John. The stub names only Iggy. They supported him across the Instinct tour — Concert Archives has Iggy / Jesus and Mary Chain / The Hangmen at the Berkeley Greek two nights later. setlist.fm files a Mary Chain date at this theatre on Oct 11, five days after the stub, which looks like a database error rather than a second night. John saw them headline the same room in 1990.
The moment
Iggy Pop in 1988 was rock's great survivor mid-rehabilitation: Instinct was out that summer, the Stooges were still a cult secret rather than a canon, and 'godfather of punk' was starting to shift from insult to job title. The undercard carried its own weight — the Jesus and Mary Chain, post-Darklands, bringing their feedback squall to a seated San Diego theater. John would be back in this same room twice more within eighteen months, for the Mary Chain with a young Nine Inch Nails, and for the Violent Femmes.
