The moment
Twenty-six years after walking out of the Smiths at 23, Johnny Marr finally put his own name on an album — The Messenger, February 2013, the same month NME handed him its Godlike Genius award. The great sideman of his generation (The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, the Cribs) stepped to the microphone at last, and the shows settled the one debt fans cared about: Smiths songs, sung by the man who wrote their music. Three tickets — John, Dave, and Gary — at the Paradise.
From the time
- The Messenger
“The 2013 debut under his own name — twenty-six years and a half-dozen bands after the Smiths ended.”
