The Youth & Young Manhood tour, a free WFNX show when they were still a club band. No database has it — WFNX’s club shows went largely unlogged. John believes this is the show the April 2003 Axis bill turned into, after Kings of Leon and Ben Kweller were split onto separate nights.
The moment
Youth & Young Manhood made Kings of Leon enormous in Britain and nearly anonymous at home — the NME crowned the Followill brothers the Southern Strokes while American radio shrugged. So 2003 caught them playing free radio shows in American clubs: beards, thrift-store denim, garage-fried Southern rock, years before the reinvention. By the time John saw them again at the Orpheum in 2008, 'Sex on Fire' was weeks from making them a stadium band and the first act was over. This was the club version, courtesy of WFNX.
From the time
- Youth & Young Manhood
“The 2003 debut that made them UK stars while America caught up — the raw, Southern-fried first act.”
