The moment

Perry Farrell invented this as a funeral — a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction dressed up as a traveling carnival — and accidentally built the machine that organized alternative culture for the next decade. The inaugural 1991 run stacked Siouxsie, Living Colour, Ice-T, the Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band, and a young Nine Inch Nails onto one stage, two months before Nevermind proved the audience was there all along. Twenty-six dollars for the whole first draft of the nineties, in a college stadium in Chula Vista.
