The moment
Magic and Loss was Lou Reed's song cycle about watching two friends die of cancer within a year — played live in full, in sequence, in seated halls, with audiences asked to hold their applause. It was the least rock-show rock show of 1992, staged in an actual symphony hall, and it suited him: Reed at 50, past needing anyone's approval, treating a concert like a reading. Twenty-five dollars for the most serious room in San Diego that spring.
