The moment

That exact summer, 'So Alive' was sitting in the American top five — three ex-members of Bauhaus, the most funereal band of the post-punk era, with a glammed-up radio smash between Paula Abdul and Prince on the charts. Nobody saw it coming, least of all them. John had seen Love and Rockets at the same amphitheater a year earlier as a goth-adjacent cult act; this time they were, however briefly and improbably, pop stars. The stub is dated to the peak of the fluke.
