The moment
'Song for Zula' had spent 2013 doing what career-making songs do — ending up on every year-end list, in every playlist, the synth-and-pedal-steel heartbreak hymn that turned Matthew Houck from critics' secret into a headliner. Muchacho was the album, written after a rough breakup and a retreat to Mexico, and this Sinclair show caught the victory lap in a room that would soon be too small. The first of the archive's three Phosphorescent sightings, a decade apart end to end.
From the time
- Muchacho
“The 2013 breakthrough — heartbreak, Mexico, and 'Song for Zula,' the song that changed Houck's weight class.”
