The moment
Screamadelica was six months old — the record where a Stones-worshipping Glasgow band handed their tapes to acid-house producers and accidentally made the era's great dance-rock communion. Later that year it would win the first Mercury Prize ever awarded. Touring it meant recreating a rave with a rock band, and John caught that experiment twelve dollars deep in a Tijuana club — the border venue where San Diego's underage crowd went to see everything the arenas wouldn't book.
