The moment

Every Shane MacGowan ticket was a small act of faith — the Pogues had sacked him in 1991, the Popes were his second life, and the standing joke that he wouldn't survive the decade was already a decade old. But the joke missed the point: when he showed up, the songs — 'If I Should Fall from Grace with God,' 'A Rainy Night in Soho' — were still the finest Irish songwriting of his century. He outlasted every prediction until 2023. John got one night of the miracle, at the Avalon, with a 25-cent donation printed on the stub.
