The moment

For a few months in 1990, Sinéad O'Connor was the biggest star on the planet — 'Nothing Compares 2 U' had just finished four weeks at #1, the album held the top of the charts most of the spring, and the shaved head and the tear in the video were the images of the year. She was 23. The SNL protest and the pile-on that unmade her public life were still two years away; this was the brief, total ascendancy, outdoors at the Open Air Theatre.
