The moment

Sonic Temple was the year the Cult completed their transformation — Bradford goth cult to Bob Rock-produced arena hard rock, 'Fire Woman' on rock radio, Ian Astbury in full shaman-frontman flight — and they closed 1989 in a San Diego arena two nights before New Year's. Jason Bonham's band was on this bill too, making him the only opener in the archive John caught under two different headliners in the same city within a year. The Cult would appear on three of John's stubs across four years; this was the biggest room.
