The small campus club in Aztec Center — John remembered the room but placed it at UCSD. The only documented The La's show anywhere in San Diego, and by then the band had one album and were most of the way to falling apart. No ticket survives. The moment
The La's are rock's great vanishing act: one perfect album, released in 1990 over Lee Mavers' furious objections — he disowned it in the press while 'There She Goes' became one of the era's immortal singles — and then, after the 1991 touring wound down, nothing. No second album, ever. Mavers retreated into legend. This campus-club show, the only documented La's date in San Diego, fell inside that closing window: John saw a band most people never got to see at all, months before the door shut.
