The moment
Evan Dando, three days before Christmas, in the Middle East basement — a hometown holiday show from Boston's great almost-was. The reconstituted Lemonheads had a new album out and nothing to prove: It's a Shame About Ray had long since settled into canon, and Dando had outlived the 90s-casualty narrative to become something rarer, a survivor who still sounded exactly like himself. Cambridge in December, 'My Drug Buddy' in a basement, everyone home for the holidays.
From the time
