The moment

The Who had already said farewell — the 1982 tour was billed as the end — so the 25th anniversary run was the first great test of whether rock's goodbyes ever stick. They came back huge: a fifteen-piece band, full performances of Tommy, Townshend rationing his shredded hearing, stadiums only. The cynics called it a victory lap; the crowds got 'Baba O'Riley' either way. John saw it at Jack Murphy — the Who entering their long third act as their own traveling monument.
