The moment
Willie Nelson at 68, in a college hockey arena in Durham, New Hampshire, four months after closing the post-9/11 telethon with 'America the Beautiful' — that winter he was functioning as something closer to national infrastructure than a touring act. The Great Divide had just come out, but nobody buys a Willie ticket for the new record: you go because Trigger is older than most of the audience and 'Whiskey River' opens the set like sunrise. Some shows you attend; Willie you pay respects to, while you can.
