Opened January 30, 1878 and built by shipwrights, it is the oldest operating theater in New Hampshire and among the oldest in the country. It remains one of the last hemp houses in the United States, still flying scenery on a rope, block-and-tackle and counterweight rig dating to 1901. The D'Oyly Carte company played The Pirates of Penzance here within weeks of its American premiere.
