Opened in November 1976 by journalist and folk-music lover Jay Smith as a gathering place for local musicians. College-radio DJ Bruce Pingree ran its booking for more than two decades starting in 1983. After 40 continuous years it closed in 2017 for a gut renovation to meet code, reopening under new ownership as its third incarnation. The room publishes per-floor figures rather than one total: 86 downstairs and 102 up.
