Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds formed in 1983 from the wreckage of Melbourne's Birthday Party and became one of rock's longest-running serious enterprises: murder ballads, love songs, and scripture-haunted narratives delivered by the greatest showman-preacher of his generation, with Warren Ellis increasingly the band's second engine. The late trilogy written through the death of Cave's son — Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen, and beyond — turned the project into something closer to public grief work, and filled arenas doing it.
