The band's first Boston show, on the first US tour — documented on setlist.fm and reviewed in the local press. John remembered the Paradise night first and the Avalon date second: he was at both, three months apart. No ticket survives for this one; the stub in the collection is the June Avalon ticket. Dave, remembering the night: "He wasn't in a wheelchair."
The moment
Two months before this night, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history. The American release was barely a month old, the band were still teenagers and early twenties, and the first US club tour was the hottest ticket of the spring — a band already headlining festivals at home, squeezed onto the Paradise's little stage because that's what had been booked before everything exploded. Three months later they were back at the Avalon; John caught both ends of the leap.
From the time
- Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
“The debut that outsold Oasis out of the gate — the fastest-selling first album the UK charts had ever seen.”
