The moment
Lilith Fair was Sarah McLachlan's answer to an industry rule so entrenched nobody wrote it down: radio and promoters wouldn't stack two women back to back. Her response — a traveling festival of nothing but women — became the top-grossing festival tour of 1997 and rolled through 1998 even bigger. The Del Mar stop is where it intersected John's running Indigo Girls thread, his third of four sightings. A festival built to disprove a superstition, and it did.
