Henry Rollins was a year past Black Flag sainthood into something new — The End of Silence had just put his name on a major label, and the spoken-word-warrior-fronting-a-jazz-punk-machine era was at full intensity. But the footnote became the headline: Tool opened, three months off the Opiate EP, an unknown LA band still a year from Undertow. Fourteen dollars in a Tijuana club for a future arena-filling art-metal institution playing to whoever showed up early.
