The moment

Gold was ten days old. Its opening track was 'New York, New York,' and the video — shot against the Manhattan skyline on September 7, 2001, four days before the towers fell — was in constant rotation that fall as an accidental elegy. Adams was 26, Whiskeytown was barely a year behind him, Heartbreaker had made him alt-country's crown prince, and Gold was the major-label bet that he was the next great American songwriter. The Paradise got him right at the center of that moment.
