The moment
The Mother Hips were California's best-kept secret — Chico's cosmic-American band, worshipped up and down the state and unknown past its borders — and this Saturday night put them on the Sunset Strip at the Roxy, with Convoy opening. For John the undercard was the point: his band-family from San Diego, playing the most storied 500 feet of rock and roll real estate in America. Twelve years later he saw the Hips again in a Cambridge club, still a secret, still great.
From the time
- The Mother Hips
“Chico's long-running cosmic-American institution — a California legend that stayed California's.”
