Five dollars, a strip-mall club on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, a '91X Rising Stars' bill — and the rising star was real: fear was out and going nowhere yet, six months from 'All I Want' changing everything. John saw Toad twice in six weeks that winter, here and at the Graduate in January, which means the archive holds the band's last anonymous season in duplicate. Nobody buys two five-dollar tickets to history on purpose; sometimes it just works out that way.
