Dave Hodges and Greg Gilholm opened it on September 28, 1974 inside a WWII-era Quonset hut on Cedros Avenue that had been a waterbed showroom. The name was Hodges' retort to skeptics who predicted the bar would go belly up. It started at roughly 100 capacity with no stage and grew into a 600-capacity club, still independent, fifty years on.
