Wilco at the Belly Up on the Summerteeth tour. John initially placed Blue Mountain's support slot here, then corrected it: they opened for Son Volt at this venue instead. The escape hatch in the old note was the right call.
The moment
Summerteeth was two months old — the album where Wilco left alt-country for Brian Wilson pop, all Mellotrons and dark lyrics under bright melodies, and the first real signal that Jeff Tweedy intended to follow the songs wherever they went. The critics loved it; the label had already made them retool it for a single. The fights that produced Yankee Hotel Foxtrot were loading. This was John's first Wilco show of many — a beach-town roadhouse in Solana Beach, years before the Orpheum victory lap he'd catch in 2002.
From the time
- Summerteeth
“The 1999 pop pivot — the record where Wilco stopped being an alt-country band and started being an argument with their label.”
