The moment

Wilco walked onstage this night owning an album no store could sell. Reprise had rejected Yankee Hotel Foxtrot that summer; the band bought back the masters, left the label, and started streaming the whole thing free on their website — so the Avalon crowd sang along to songs that officially didn't exist. The Nonesuch deal was weeks away, the triumphant release six months out. John caught the limbo tour, then the Orpheum victory lap a year later: the full arc, both stubs saved.
