The moment
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the great vindication story in American rock: Reprise rejected it as uncommercial and let the band walk, then Nonesuch — another arm of the same corporation — bought it back and released it to the best reviews of 2002. Warner effectively paid for the same album twice. By this October night it was Wilco's highest-charting record ever, the documentary about the whole mess was in theaters, and the band that had been given up on was selling out the Orpheum. John, Jonas, and Mickey saw the victory lap.
From the time
- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
“Rejected by one Warner label and released by another — the corporate blunder that became the most acclaimed American record of 2002.”
