Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston in 1986 by Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering. Their loud-quiet-loud dynamics and surrealist songwriting on Surfer Rosa (1988) and Doolittle (1989) became the blueprint for 1990s alternative rock — Kurt Cobain said 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was his attempt to write a Pixies song. They broke up in January 1993, announced by fax, and reunited in 2004 to find themselves more famous than they'd ever been the first time.
