The moment
Trompe le Monde came out on September 23, 1991 — one day before Nevermind, the album Kurt Cobain openly admitted was him trying to write a Pixies song. So on Halloween the Pixies played a college hall in San Diego while the revolution they'd blueprinted was detonating around them. It was their last American tour as a working band: by spring they were opening U2's Zoo TV — John caught them again there five months later — and by January 1993 Black Francis had dissolved the band by fax.
From the time
- Trompe le Monde
“The final Pixies album of the original run — released one day before Nevermind, the record their sound made possible.”
