U2 are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976 — Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr., the same four members for their entire run. The Joshua Tree (1987) made them the biggest band in the world; Achtung Baby (1991) and the Zoo TV tour reinvented them and did it again. Few acts have held stadium scale across four decades, and fewer still managed two entirely different imperial phases.
