Also on the bill, recovered from setlist.fm's record of who played this room that night. setlist.fm stores no running order, so the slot each act played is unknown. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club opened, per John, and setlist.fm logs them at the Avalon that night. John saw them headline T.T. the Bear's the next year and House of Blues in 2010.
The moment
Let It Come Down was the album Jason Pierce made after his entire band quit — over a hundred musicians, choirs and orchestras stacked into gospel-sized arrangements, then hauled out on tour behind the most famous space-rock catalog in Britain. Touring it through American ballrooms in 2002 meant compressing all of that into a club PA, which is its own kind of spectacle. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club opened, one album into their run as the leather-jacket wing of the rock revival — John would see them headline twice more over the next eight years.
From the time
- Let It Come Down
“The 2001 album Jason Pierce built with over a hundred musicians after losing his whole band — Spiritualized at maximum orchestral scale.”
