The moment
Boys and Girls in America was four weeks old and pulling the best reviews of 2006 — the album that took the Hold Steady from critics' secret to 'the best bar band in America' being said without irony. Twelve dollars, 18-plus, the Middle East basement, the night before Halloween. This is the first of John's Hold Steady shows, and the smallest room he'd ever get them in: eight years later it was a House of Blues co-headline with Deer Tick, and the Sinclair after that.
From the time
- Boys and Girls in America
“The 2006 breakout — Craig Finn's dense bar-napkin narratives welded to the biggest riffs the band ever cut.”
