The 2014 co-headline tour — billed as The Hold Steady and Deer Tick, the two bands covered each other's songs all spring. Deer Tick played a full fifteen-song set first; the Hold Steady closed with twenty-four. Filed for years as a Deer Tick show with the Hold Steady merely 'also on the bill' — the running order, documented on setlist.fm and in the night's reviews, settles the billing. Still the second of John's two House of Blues Deer Tick nights; he did not attend their November 2023 return to the room. No ticket survives.

The moment

Opening night of the co-headline tour, three weeks after Teeth Dreams and ten years after Almost Killed Me — the Hold Steady entering their second decade by splitting the bill with the band that most obviously inherited their bar-band-with-literature gene. The two camps spent the spring covering each other's songs, and the House of Blues got the first night of the experiment: thirty-nine songs between them, no ballads wasted.
