Four years later he and Jack White formed The Raconteurs. John saw Benson headline the Middle East the following year.

The moment
Spring 2002 caught the White Stripes on the last upswing before they got huge. White Blood Cells was nine months old and finally catching fire — 'Fell in Love with a Girl' and its Lego video were in heavy rotation, and the garage-rock revival was the music story of the year. The Roxy's roughly 1,000 capacity is about as small a room as you could still see them in: a year later Elephant and 'Seven Nation Army' turned them into a festival-headline act. This was the club-sized White Stripes, barely.
