The Middle East began in 1970 as a Lebanese restaurant in Central Square, bought by the Sater brothers in 1975. In 1993 they turned the basement — formerly a bowling alley — into the Downstairs room. Workers hit an unknown underground spring during construction and the opening slipped two weeks. The Boston Phoenix later called the complex the nexus of metro Boston's rock-club scene.
