Opened May 5, 1989 in Plaza Pueblo Amigo, minutes past the San Diego border. Its 18-and-over policy made it a magnet for American teenagers locked out of 21-plus clubs at home, and in about five years it caught an extraordinary run of bands on the cusp: Nirvana twice, Jane's Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam. It closed in 1994 as border-city insecurity rose.
