The moment

Love and Theft came out on September 11, 2001 — the reviews calling it his best record in decades shared newsprint with the towers falling. Two months later Dylan was carrying that album through a fall arena tour critics were treating as a late-career peak: sixty years old, the Never Ending Tour band at full strength, playing to a country that had just changed. Manchester's arena had been open six days. John and Mickey watched Dylan christen a brand-new building from the middle of his great third act.
