The moment
The last Dylan in the archive, and the bill carried sixty years of history: Mavis Staples opened — the Staple Singers' voice of the civil rights movement, and the woman Dylan proposed to in the early sixties, a story she's told with delight ever since. She said no; the friendship outlasted everything. Dylan was deep in his American-songbook period, croon and fedora, rearranging his catalog past recognition as always. John and Becky watched two national monuments share a hockey arena in November.
From the time
- Mavis Staples
“The civil-rights-era voice who turned down Dylan's marriage proposal and opened for him half a century later.”
